Building a deck is not something that is out of reach for the typical do-it-yourselfer. If you take your time planning, have plenty of help, and can allocate enough time to work on your deck project, you should be able to build a new deck for the fraction of the cost of hiring a professional to do it. Also, by doing it yourself, you can also add in some special features that you normally couldn't afford to do if you hired someone. For example, one deck I built at my previous home featured built-in benches, a recessed lower level, and a large arbor supporting my favorite hammock.
However, keep in mind that building a deck can be very difficult. Part of the complications in such a project lie in the owner's underestimating the task as a whole. Proper planning will help you overcome this. There are software tools that will allow you to design a deck with your computer. You can also hire a designer to plan your deck for you and a structural engineer to verify the plans and make sure that your lumber is strong enough to support your new deck.
If you have little or no experience with woodworking or carpentry, then the task of building a deck is best left to the professional. You really want to consult someone before taking on such an undertaking. This does not mean that you have to hire a contractor but it does mean that you have to plan with someone who knows what he is doing. Having an experienced helper to assist you in building a deck can save you a lot of headaches in the future.
One of the things that a professional deck builder will tell you is that you have to make sure that the structure adheres to modern building code requirements. This includes choosing the right lumber and creating properly sized plans that will realistically hold up to the test of time. This is one of the most important aspects of building a deck and is imperative if your town or township has building codes for decks and requires a building permit. If a building permit is required you will have to submit plans to the township office and will also have to submit to inspections during construction. This will ensure that your deck is safe.
The planning stage can help you move things along quicker once the construction phase is under way. A well-planned project that has earned a permit from your local township will run much smoother than a last minute project that isn't as well thought-out.
